Award-winning journalist.Award-winning storyteller. Emerging playwright.
I spent more than three decades in journalism and professional storytelling, and have been involved in theatre since my teens as an actor, stage manager and director. A few years ago I began writing plays. My first play was a collaboration with Don Correll, drama instructor at Center Stage, Lower Columbia College. It whet my appetite to create a play of my own.
My first solo play, The Harder Courage, was a 2018 finalist in the Ashland New Plays Festival. A historical tragedy set in Cowlitz County, Wash., Courage tells the touching story of the friendship between a sheriff and the man he must hang for murder. I didn’t intentionally write a Western, but that’s what it turned out to be. It is one of the original plays invited to join the ANPF’s Play4Keeps podcast site, launched in late 2018 (also on YouTube). Theatre 33 in Salem, Ore., gave it a developmental workshop in August 2019. It just completed its Washington premiere at Stageworks Northwest March 11-27, 2022. Next, it will have a virtual reading June 29 as part of States of Play, which features plays set in every state, all by female+ playwrights! (You have to join the Facebook page to watch the readings, or possibly even be a reader.)
Read my master timeline I created while researching the play (and have continued to update) here.
